"The SB400 is a perfect match for the D40 (& similar) Nikon cameras.

It is easy to use and is far superior to the on-board flash for both night shots and interior pictures. It also works well when a little 'fill-in' flash is required for outdoor portraits etc.,

After a little experimentation, the swivel head works well for 'bounced' flash when taking in the 'landscape' mode and with a small piece of white card and a little ingenuity the 'bounced' flash mode can also be successful in the portait mode as well.

I would highly recommend this product for those who are looking for a dedicated, and uncomplicated, flash gun for their Nikon camera."

"This is great to use on D90 or similar Nikon. Main improvement over built in flash is the ability to bounce of the ceiliing. Although, when shooting in portrait this is not posible.

Still bounce flash makes the lighting softer and more natural. Not tested outdoors as yet.

If using flash straight at the subject I think the built in flash is sufficient on D90.
